IAS-UI has officially entered into an agreement on academic partnership with the African Studies Institute (ASI) of the University of Georgia, Athens, USA. This agreement is preliminary to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Georgia and the University of Ibadan.

The agreement between our Institute and ASI encompasses a range of activities, including an annual conference, exchange programmes covering staff and students of both institutes, joint research projects on areas of interest in African Studies covering both the continent and its diaspora, collaboration on curricular matters, and the production of scholarly journals and other publications.

ASI Director Dr Akinloye Ojo was in our Institute on Monday, 5 March 2018 to sign the agreement. It was a homecoming for Dr Ojo, an alumnus of the University of Ibadan where he obtained his BA in linguistics in 1991. He was received by IAS Director, Dr O.I. Pogoson, and Dr Senayon Olaoluwa of our Diaspora and Transnational Studies Unit. Dr Ojo expressed enthusiasm for the relationship with our Institute, and he announced that a guest academic from ASI would deliver a lecture in our Institute in April. He stated that both ASI and the University of Georgia are happy to be associated with our Institute and the University of Ibadan, and that this initial agreement with IAS is the first step that the University of Georgia is taking in fostering a holistic partnership with the University of Ibadan. In his remarks, Dr Pogoson noted the benefits of such international collaborations and the need for Institutes of African Studies across the globe to work together in various areas of intervention.

Dr Ojo received a package of IAS publications from Dr Pogoson.
