IAS-UI in collaboration with the IAS student body (ASSA) and APKASS marked this year’s Black History Month with a slew of programmes on 22 February, 2018 at Drapers Hall. The theme of the celebration was ‘You and the Black History Month’.

Coordinated by the Dr Sola Olorunyomi of our Cultural and Media Studies Unit, the celebration featured discussions, music, and a film screening. Attendance was drawn from both the University community and much farther afield, with the chairperson of the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Deji Omole, gracing the occasion.

Dr Tony Marinho of Educare Trust and Dr Maria Martin, an African American Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar at our Institute, led the discussion on the significance of Black History Month as a period for paying particular attention to the Black experience and predicament in Africa and its diasporas. The Aditu JAZZ+ Band was on hand to entertain the audience with performances of African and Diaspora music, cutting across a variety of genres.

Another highlight of the celebration was the screening of Sidney Lumet’s 1970 documentary ‘King: A Filmed Record… Montgomery to Memphis’. The screening was an invitation to members of the audience to meditate on the struggle for Black emancipation, to derive lessons from the setbacks and the achievements of that struggle, and to put in perspective the current situation of Black people in the different socio-political contexts they find themselves in the world.
