The research on and manufacture of traditional medicinal products received a major boost on September 11, 2017 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between PaxHerbals and the Nigerian Institute for Medical Research (NIMR).

PaxHerbals, founded by Rev Fr Anselm Adodo in 1996, is a manufacturer of alternative medicinal products based on traditional African materia medica, and has over the years nurtured a relationship with IAS’s unit on Traditional African Medicine and Belief Systems. The NIMR is Nigeria’s foremost governmental agency overseeing the manufacture and standardization of medical products in the country.

At the signing of the MoU on September 11, the need to integrate traditional medicine into the official medical system in Nigeria was emphasized, and the areas of focus identified include encouraging the use of natural products indigenously sourced for the manufacture of medications, collaborating on laboratory and clinical verification of such medications, and opening up of channels both for the cross-fertilization of the knowledge base as well as for the transfer of medical information and medical technology. It was also recognized that medical doctors will not practise effectively if they do not have an understanding of the medical culture and beliefs of the people.

Dr C.O. Jegede of our Traditional African Medicine and Belief Systems Unit duly represented IAS-UI at the press conference at which Rev Fr Adodo and Prof B.L. Salako, Director General of the NIMR, signed the MoU. With this development, students from our Institute pursuing the MA and PhD in Traditional African Medicine can undertake internships at MIMR facilities.
