Chief Kelvin Obiegbunam, the President General of the Town Union of the ancient Nri Kingdom, paid a visit to our Institute today.

Among other matters, Chief Obiegbunam discussed with IAS Director, Dr I.A. Jimoh, and Professor O.I. Pogoson, who is Honorary Curator of our museums, plans to refurbish the Odinani Museum located in the Nri Kingdom and established in 1972 as a joint project of our Institute and the Nri Progress Union.

The ancient Nri Kingdom is famed for its excellent preservation of the traditions and institutions of the Igbo people, most notably for the outstanding collection of Igbo-Ukwu bronze works excavated by Prof Thurstan Shaw who was Research Professor in our Institute.

The Odinani Museum was founded by IAS-UI in a hall donated to it by the people of the Nri Kingdom, and has since been run as part of our museum services.

Today’s visit by Chief Obiegbunam has occurred at a most auspicious time as we rethink our museum operations, as evidenced in the renaming of the Institute Museum last November as the Cornelius Adepegba Museum of African Art (CAMAA).

Our next plan of action is to reinvigorate the Odinani Museum in Nri, Anambra State, as a major hub of museum services in the south-eastern parts of Nigeria, housing artefacts of the highest cultural and scholarly value.
