In Honour of Prof Mosunmola Omibiyi-Obidike and Prof Olufemi Bamigboye Olaoba

Theme: History and Music in Culture and Development

On Wednesday, 5 July, 2017 IAS-UI celebrated the lifework of Prof Mosunmola Omibiyi-Obidike and Prof Olufemi Olaoba, two intellectual giants whose decease last year was deeply felt in the circles of Nigerian academia.

To mark their passing, two lectures around a double-pronged theme combining their respective disciplines of Musicology and History were delivered at Drapers Hall. Dr Olisa Muojama of the Department of History, University of Ibadan, and Dr Abel Adeleke of the Music Department of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, were the guest lecturers at the event coordinated by Dr Olorunyomi of our Cultural and Media Studies Unit and Dr Samuel of our IAS African Music Unit. The Chairman of the occasion was Prof ’Wole Olatokun of the African Regional Centre for Information Management, University of Ibadan.

Prof Omibiyi-Obidike, born in 1943, and educated at University of California, Los Angeles, where she obtained her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, was one-time Director of our Institute, and the first female professor of music in sub-Saharan Africa. Her contributions to the preservation of the folk traditions of African music and dance, and her intervention to ensure that indigenous musical forms and practices remain the bedrock of the curriculum of music education in Nigeria and Africa will not be forgotten.

Prof Olufemi Olaoba, historian and poet, educated at the University of Ibadan, taught African History at IAS for many years, during which time he cultivated a reputation for incisive interest in the culture history of Yorubaland, focusing mainly on the chieftaincy institution and the traditional legal system and process. He was also a specialist in the methods of indigenous conflict management and peacebuilding processes.

The memorial lectures delivered in their honour will be produced as monographs in the IAS Occasional Publications Series.
