As part of activities and events marking the 68th convocation of the University of Ibadan, the Institute of African Studies is featuring an exhibition of the works of the renowned painter Duke Asidere. Curated by the Director of the Institute, Dr O.I. Pogoson, Asidere’s Springs of Hope exhibition runs from 10 November, 2016 to 30 January, 2017 at the Museum of the Institute. The exhibition shall be declared open by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abel Idowu Olayinka, on November 10 at 5:00 p.m.

Duke Asidere graduated from the famed Ahmadu Bello University where he earned a BA (First Class Honours) in Fine Arts in 1988. He also holds an MFA (1990) from the same university. His work has featured in solo and group exhibitions in Nigeria, France and the UK.

Frank Ugiomoh, the Yemisi Shyllon Professor of Fine Art and Design at the University of Port Harcourt, describes Asidere as being ‘adroit with colour, sophisticated with lines and articulate with space’. Asidere’s emotional intensity and his ability to blend styles from diverse traditions fit well with his eclectic thematic range.  Dr Babasehinde Ademuleya of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, calls attention to the ‘calmness and noticeable serenity that permeate [Asidere’s] works’, while also noting ‘his rebellion as well as his radicalism and his protest art’. The essays by Ugiomoh and Ademuleya are gathered together in the Exhibition Handbook edited by Dr Pogoson.

The annual IAS Convocation Fine Art Exhibition, now in its seventh edition, adds colour to the University of Ibadan convocation ceremony. It also provides an avenue for town and gown to come together in an aesthetically and intellectually stimulating atmosphere. Previous editions have featured the works of such world-famous artists as Oyerinde Olotu and Olu Amoda.
