IAS-UI is a major partner in the annual Diaspora Festival Badagry, one of our principal responsibilities being to collaborate with other agencies and institutions in organizing the symposium and other scholarly aspects of the celebration. This year’s festival, one of whose highlights was the ceremony of the opening of the ‘Door of Return’, held between 23rd and 25th August, 2017.

International Conference on Indigenous Traditional Knowledge

IAS-UI and other Nigerian agencies concerned about researching and preserving indigenous knowledge systems are in partnership to convene an International Conference on Indigenous Traditional Knowledge, which will hold between October 5 and 6, 2017 at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Lagos.

The conference’s theme is ‘The Contribution of Indigenous Knowledge in Stimulating Integral Development in Nigeria and Africa’.

GlobAfrica Colloquium: Reconnecting Africa

The GlobAfrica Colloquium took place at Drapers Hall on Friday, June 23, 2017 in collaboration with the Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique (IFRA) and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS), Johannesburg.
Africa’s historical presence in relation to, and in exchange with, other parts of the world before the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism is often underemphasized in various accounts of the continent’s history. GlobAfrica is a project that aims to explore this presence.

The 5th Badagry Diaspora Festival Conference comes up between 22 and 23 August, 2017. IAS’s Diaspora and Transnational Studies unit is responsible together with other partners for the conference aspect of the Badagry Diaspora Festival. The theme this year is ‘African Diaspora beyond the Black Atlantic: Dynamics and Significance in the Latin America World and Elsewhere’.

An Institute of African Studies and The Nordic Africa Institute Conference.

Between the 21st and 22nd of June, 2017, a joint conference organized by the Institute of African Studies and the Nordic Africa Institute was held at Lady Bank-Anthony Hall, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan. The conference on the theme ‘Enfranchising the African Diaspora: Comparing Notes across Sub-Saharan Africa’ brought together African and Africanist scholars from near and far to deliberate on a timely issue whose relevance cannot be overstressed given the different ways and dimensions in which African countries and their various diasporas are invested in one another.
